Vestaburg – Virginia A. Snyder, age 89, of Vestaburg, MI, went to be with the Lord, Sunday, May 8, 2016, at Warwick Living Center in Alma, Michigan. Virginia was born in Ferris Township, Montcalm County, on March 25, 1927 to Abe and Nila (Beach) Snyder.

Virginia attended rural country school in Oak Grove, two miles from home. She graduated from Vestaburg High School in 1945 and from Goshen College, in Goshen Indiana in 1950. She graduated with a B.S. in Education, majoring in Home Economics.  Virginia then obtained a vocational certificate by attending summer sessions at Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, and Western Michigan University. She taught homemaking for fourteen years and was advisor to FHA groups at Newaygo, Sheridan, Beaverton and Grant, Michigan.

Virginia then developed an interest in library science, and pursued studies in summer sessions at Central Michigan University earning a M.A. in school librarianship in 1968.  She served as high school librarian in Belding, MI for seventeen years, before retiring in 1981.

Following her retirement she audited classes in floriculture at MSU and in 1982 had a single greenhouse constructed on her farm on Crystal Road south of Vestaburg and raised and sold wholesale and retail bedding plants for ten years.  “Snyders Greenhouse” was sold to niece Doris Snyder in 1991; and she was pleased to watch the development of a larger operation, specializing in annuals and perennials.

Virginia enjoyed retirement years in her country home, having time for reading, gardening, baking and quilt- making.  She was interested in family history and genealogy and enjoyed helping with reunions of her extended families of both her mother and father.  Previously, she had traveled in summer or vacation time, retirement permitted more time to travel and visit with friends and relatives.  Trips included visits to most of the continental states, including Alaska, Canadian Provinces of Alberta, Ontario and the Maritimes and to Puerto Rico.

Virginia was a lifelong member of Ferris Church of Christ, after moving back to the family farm, where she’d had a new home built next door to the Beach family home, she could take a more active part in the local church.  She helped organize and plan activities for the Young at Heart monthly meetings. Always interested in preparation of youth for Christian service, she was supportive of Rock Lake Christian Assembly and Great Lakes Christian College.

She was a lifetime member of Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel and served as Treasurer of County chapter for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a foster brother Royal Snyder; aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by Royal’s wife Ophia Snyder of Vestaburg and their children: nephews, John and Doris Snyder of Vestaburg, Victor and Soami Snyder of Puerto Rico, Daniel Snyder of Vestaburg; nieces Betsy Snyder and Deane Snyder of Vestaburg; Great nieces and nephews and several great-great nieces and nephews.  Also surviving are many cousins of both Beach and Snyder families.

Visitation for Virginia will be held at the Brigham Funeral Chapel in Vestaburg, Michigan on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at 6:00-8:00 pm and on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Ferris Church of Christ at 10:00 am to until the start of the funeral service at 11:00 am with Pastors Ray Merritt and Joshua Rude officiating. Burial will be held at Ferris Township Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the church.

Virginia and I shared many years at Belding High School. I first met her when I taught English and then joined her in the libraries when I became the middle school librarian.
When Virginia retired, I "tried" to replace her at the high school.
She was a very special person and I am so fortunate to have known her.
