Nathan W. Sackett

Nathan Warren Sackett, 95, of Edmore peacefully passed away with family by his side at his home on Sunday morning October 2, 2016. He is joining his beloved wife June of 74 years, who went to her heavenly home on June 2, 2015.

Nathan was born on March 4, 1921 to Hiram and Edna Hansen Sackett on their farm in Edmore, Day Township.

Nathan lived in the McBride area all his life and attended school until the 8th grade. He furthered his education through Michigan State University Agricultural Short Course. Nathan married June Lemoine Stratton at her family home on November 5, 1941. He worked along with his father and brother Keith on their dairy and potato farm until 1955, when their father retired. At that time Nathan and Keith decided to each start their own farming operations. Nathan operated Nathan Sackett & Son and later Sackett Acres, Inc. until he retired in 1985. As a young man Nathan enjoyed working with horses that were used on the farm until they were phased out after the first tractor was purchased in 1936.

Nathan was a member of Michigan Farmers Union, Michigan Farm Bureau and Chief Wabasis Potato Growers. In 1980, he was Farmer of the Year. His McBride Church of Christ family was important to him. He was church treasurer from 1969 to 1977.

Even after retirement Nathan continued to work on the farm doing field work. His well manicured yard was the envy of everyone who saw it. In the winters he and June went to their Bradenton, Florida home and enjoyed walking, riding bike around their Fair Lane Acres Park, and especially eating out with friends and family. The winter trips came to an end when the home was sold in 2007.

Nathan will be missed by his son, Stuart (Linda) Sackett of Edmore; daughter Sue (Jon “Jack”) Richards of Mt Pleasant; five grandchildren: Beth (Scott) Parker of Stanton, Sherry Sackett-Getts (Seymour Race) of Fenwick, Troy (Lisa) Sackett of Stanton, Amanda (Joe) Fox of Mt Pleasant, and Annette Richards of Mt Pleasant; eight great grandchildren: Elizabeth (Ben) Wickerham of Flushing, Alyssa (Jason) Howard of Blanchard, Chauncey (Maria) Parker of Stanton, David Dew of Fenwick, Andria Getts (Steve Vanderhulst) of Ionia, Quinten Sackett of East Lansing, Logan Sackett of Allendale and Jillian Fox of Mt Pleasant; ten great-great grandchildren: Augustus and Wren Wickerham, Myla Schafer, Briley, Remington and Kimber Howard, Oliver Vanderhulst, Jorgen, Thea and Hank Parker; sister-in-laws: Bonnie Sackett of Lansing, Jean (Rex) Throop of Vestaburg, Virginia Stratton of Vestaburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Nathan’s family would like to give a special thank you to the loving home care workers; Christine Mol who started caring for our parents almost 5 years ago, soon followed by Debbie Nichols, and Darla Houck. You have become a part of the family.

Nathan was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Edna Sackett; his wife, June; older brother & sister-in-law, Keith & Dorotha Sackett; and younger brother, Derwin Peter Sackett.

Funeral Services for Nathan will be Friday, October 7, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Brigham Chapel in Edmore, Michigan with Steve Dobyns, minister of McBride Church of Christ officiating. Visitation will be Thursday October 6, 2016 at 4-7 pm and 1 hour prior to the Service on Friday at the Edmore Chapel.
