Robert “Bob” Alexander Charnley
Robert “Bob” Alexander Charnley, age 87, of Lakeview, Michigan, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2014, at Heartland of Zephyrhills, in Zephyrhills, Florida. Robert was born June 11, 1926 in Lakeview, Michigan, the son of Frank Lorman and Dagnie Avilva (Knox) Charnley. He was raised in Lakeview and graduated from Lakeview Community Schools in 1944.
Robert served his country honorably in the Army from 1944 - 1946, as an aerial gunner and crew member of a B-29 aircraft, in the American Theater as a member of the Army Air Force. He attended college at Central Michigan University, where he attained his Bachelor’s degree. Bob was employed at Lakeview High School (LHS) as an Industrial Arts and Building Trades teacher for 31 years. He served as the Junior Varsity basketball coach and Ski Team coach while at LHS.
Robert enjoyed woodcarving, fishing, hunting, golf, downhill skiing, snow mobiling, playing cards, and spending time with family and friends. He was a lifelong member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Lakeview, Michigan. He was also a member of the Helms, Knox American Legion Post 554 in Morley, MI. Bob and his wife of 62 years, Mary, spent their summers at their cottage at Wolf Lake. Later in their retirement years, they split their time between their home in Lakeview and their winter home in Zephyrhills, Florida with their many friends from Michigan.
Bob met Mary Ann Ingraham at a dance in Six Lakes and on November 26, 1948 they were married at the Presbyterian Church in Harbor Springs. Bob and Mary raised two children in Lakeview, Michigan. Deborah Koepke lives in Stanton with her husband, Thomas. Deb has two sons: Caleb and Dane Smith from a previous marriage. Bob’s son, Kim Charnley, resides in Fenton, Michigan with his wife, Scharon. Bob is survived by his two sisters, Vivian Tanner of Big Rapids and Donna VanOcker of Traverse City.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Charnley on January 23, 2010; his parents, Frank Charnley and Dagnie Smith and step-father Lorenzo Smith.
The funeral for Bob will be held Saturday, April 19, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lakeview, Michigan at 115 Fifth St., Lakeview, MI 48850 with Pastor John Scott officiating. Visitation for Bob will be Friday, April 18, 2014 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brigham Funeral Chapel in Lakeview, Michigan. A luncheon has been planned at the church following the committal service in Lakeview.
Memorial Contributions in Bob’s memory made be made to the Bob and Mary Charnley Scholarship Fund through the Lakeview Area Community Fund.
