Milton Eugene Burns
Milton Eugene Burns, age 90, passed away on Monday, September 1, 2014 at his home in Six Lakes. He was born on December 18, 1923 in Six Lakes, the eighth of ten children born to Clifford and Viola (Bissell) Burns. He was raised in the Six Lakes area, graduated from the Six Lakes High School in 1942 and received a degree in Agriculture Management from Michigan State College in 1949.
Milton was drafted to serve in the Marine Corps Fourth Marine Division Pacific Theatre on February 2, 1943. He served in four battles: Kwajalein, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. During his time in the military he was awarded four battle stars and two purple hearts.
Milton married Martha Carolyn Fleck on May 12, 1945 in Flint, Michigan. He managed several Grain-Bean Elevators in Michigan for more than 30 years and he owned and operated the Grain-Bean Elevator in Edmore for 11 years. He also served on several agricultural boards on the State and National level.
Milton was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Edmore and was a charter member of Burns-May VFW Post 5602 since 1946. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gardening, puzzles and spending time with his grand and great-grandchildren.
Milton is survived by his wife, Martha; children: Rodney (Karen) Burns in Dunnellon, Florida, Allan (Carol) Burns in Floral City, Florida and Carolyn (Mark) Dombroske of Greenville, five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Milton was preceded in death by his parents, Clifford and Viola; a great-granddaughter, Meaghin Burns, three sisters and six brothers.
A memorial service in Milton’s honor has been scheduled for Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Edmore with Pastor Wayne Hoedt officiating. A visitation has been scheduled from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the church (one hour prior to the service). A luncheon will be served following the service at the Burns-May VFW Post 5602 in Six Lakes.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Milton’s name may be made payable to the Burns-May VFW Post 5602, American Cancer Society or Heartland Hospice.
