John Keith Cornell


John Keith Cornell, age 73, of Edmore passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Woodland Hospice in Mt. Pleasant.  John was born on January 22, 1941 in Lakeview, Michigan, the son of Melvin and Maude (Shade) Cornell.  He was raised in the Six Lakes area and graduated from Edmore High School in 1960.  He continued his education at Montcalm Community College.

John helped his parents on the family farm for years. John also worked at General Electric in Edmore until he purchased his own shop, Edmore Tool and Grinding.  He was employed as a Tool and Die Maker for over 25 years, retiring in 1998.  He was an avid John Deere fan and loved being on a tractor.  He loved to snowmobile and to sing in his church choir.  He enjoyed singing (humming) to music even when he didn’t know the words. He enjoyed woodworking and made a lot of furniture.  He was a perfectionist in his woodworking and the majority of his endeavors.  John also enjoyed yard work.  He was a 40 year member of the Masons.

John is survived by his wife, Connie (Erskin) Cornell, whom he married on June 14, 1986; seven children:  Jolyn (Dan) Stanley of Bentley, MI, Johnny Cornell  of Campbell, California, Jill (Randy) Goodfellow of Stanwood, Corie (Dennis) Wise of Raleigh, North Carolina, Derrick Hadder of Dearborn, Shaina Kramer of Rockford and Jennifer Cornell (Robert Bidlingmeyer) of Ypsilanti;  13 grandchildren:  Laura, Lisa, Anna and Sara Stanley, Tracey Cornell, JD (Jen) Gerst, Brandon Goodfellow, Harrison, Tyler and Tanner Wise, Emily and Dylan Hadder and Ava Kramer; great-grandchild:  Quenton Girst; three brothers:  Ernest (Shirley) Cornell of Six Lakes, Allan (Ann) Cornell of Lakeview, Tom (Cathy) Cornell of Stanton; father-in-law, Melvin Erskin of Six Lakes; sister-in-laws: Ruth Cornell of Six Lakes, Karen (Victor) Sheets of Crystal, bother and sister-in-law, Gerald (Vonnie) Johnston of Vestaburg and brother-in law, Chuck Erskin of Arizona.

John was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn (Nauta) Cornell in 1977, an infant son, Aaron; his parents, Melvin and Maude; his twin brother, James and his sister Glenda Anderson.

Per the family’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date this spring.
