Arlene Mae (Corder) Woodard

Arlene Mae (Corder) Woodard, 89, of Vestaburg went to be with Jesus January 18, 2014 after a short hospital stay at Gratiot Community Medical Center.

Arlene was born October 20, 1924 in Richland Township. She was a graduate of Vestaburg High School and remained in this community for her life. Arlene lived simply, never focusing on material possessions. She emphasized the importance of being honest, hardworking and self-sufficient. She labored alongside her husband, Wayne, on the family farm in rural Vestaburg where they raised twin sons, Terry and Jerry. She also worked nearly 38 years in various factories as an auto parts assembler and inspector, eventually retiring from Lobdell Emery.

Living with Type 1 diabetes for nearly 70 years, she attributed her longevity to hard work and a positive outlook on life. Until recently, she lived alone, mowed her own lawn and attended Vestaburg Church of Christ most Sundays. She enjoyed socializing with friends, playing cards, eating out at different restaurants, attending jamborees and other nearby senior citizen gatherings with her fiancé, Kenneth Roslund.

As her earthly body began to fail, being homebound was difficult. With diminished physical capabilities, she was no longer self-sufficient, which was especially tough. That was not her style.

But Arlene has a new body now. She’s been reunited with loved ones who passed before her. She will be long remembered by family and friends for her friendly, giving disposition and loving nature. Although she came from a time when saying “I love you” was rare, her actions more than revealed the love within in her heart.

Arlene was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne; sons Terry and Jerry; daughter-in-law Terry; parents, Charles and Arva (Casey) Corder, and siblings, Fern (Philomen) Frisbie, Lela (Ivan) Archambault, Joyce Hilding, Ethel (William) House, and three siblings who died in childhood, Lawerence, Flossie, and Genevieve McNeill.

She is survived by her fiancé, Kenneth Roslund of Ithaca; one sister, Darlene Leiby (Vestaburg); one brother-in-law, Glen Hilding (Edmore); one daughter-in-law, Dianne Smith (Ithaca); grandchildren Robin (Chris) Miller of Edmore, Kathy (Gary Anys) Woodard of Ada, Chris (Katrina) Woodard of Ithaca, Debbie (Chad Wiseman) Woodard of Ithaca, Sara (Bill Clagg) Church of Ithaca and Tonya (Daryl) DeVerney of Vestaburg; and great-grandchildren Matt, Erika, Brittany, Chelsea, Sarah, Nate, CJ, Ashley, Emalee, Hannah, Meagan, Alisia, Kayla, Cara, and Terian.

A funeral service to celebrate Arlene’s life has been scheduled for Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at 11 a.m. at the Vestaburg Church of Christ with Pastor Tom McNerney officiating.  A visitation has also been scheduled for Wednesday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (1 hour prior to the service).  Interment will be at the Ferris Center Cemetery in Vestaburg.  A luncheon will follow the graveside service at the Vestaburg Church of Christ fellowship hall.
