Alfred Nelson Nienhuis
Alfred Nelson Nienhuis, age 87 passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at his Lakeview residence. Alfred was born on May 28, 1927 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the son of Orie and Hyacinth (Nelson) Nienhuis. He was raised in the Grand Rapids area and graduated from South High School in Grand Rapids. He subsequently moved to Lakeview where he met his wife of 63 years.
Alfred married Jean E. Youngman on July 21, 1951 at the United Church of Christ in Lakeview. Alfred was employed in auto sales and mechanic parts at Youngman Brothers. He was in banking management for more than 15 years with the Blanchard State Bank and the Isabella State Bank. Alfred founded the Community First Federal Credit Union in 1985, which now has 3 branches.
Alfred was a member of the United Church of Christ in Lakeview where he was a deacon for several years. He enjoyed sailing, bicycling, camping and traveling. His true passion, however was always sailing. Later in life he enjoyed coin collecting.
Alfred is survived by his spouse, Jean; three children: Dr. Marc Nienhuis of Kawkawlin, Phillip (Sharon) Nienhuis of Hudsonville and Beth (Steven) Poll of Cuttlerville; nine grandchildren: Alex, Sarah, Suzanne, Stephanie, Nathan, Matthew, Anna, Jan and Eric; sister, Elaine Ward of Greenville and great friends who have been like brothers and sisters, Dr. L. B. (Lois) Farnsworth and Bruce (Karen) Weiler of Lakeview.
Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Orie and Hyacinth and brother, John Nienhuis.
A memorial service will be held honoring Alfred on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at 12 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Lakeview with Pastor David W. England officiating. The family will receive the love and support from friends and family at a visitation scheduled from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (2 hours prior to the service) at the church. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery immediately after the ceremony. A luncheon will be provided immediately after the service and continue after the interment.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made payable to the United Church of Christ.
